In a symbolic action, a number of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) lay off employees disguise as sentenced of death to express their protest against their dismissal from their jobs, which is like death penalty for them, as it is destroying their lives and their families.
The participants in this protest against the dismissal of about 1 000 UNRWA employees in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday raised banners and slogans calling on the agency to abandon its decision, and to stop taking measures that would reduce in the services and employees, as well as, to meet the trade union’s demands.
In the meantime, all the employees are expected to enter on Monday in a comprehensive strike at various UNRWA institutions, following the UNRWA employees’ union in Gaza to protest against the administration's policy in the sector and its refusal to meet to all proposals and solutions submitted by the union and the mediators.
” Amir al-Meshal”, the head of the UNRWA employees’ in Gaza, announced the union's response during the past period with all the mediations undertaken by the various parties to address the crisis and to curb its aggravations. Moreover, he called on the Commissioner-General of UNRWA to bear his responsibilities towards the UNRWA workers in Gaza and called for president Mahmoud Abbas’ intervention to pressure the UNRWA management to meet the employees’ demands as it was the case with the UNRWA workers in the West Bank, calling on the government agencies in the sector to hold their responsibilities as well.
It is noteworthy that the union has contributed to the provision of $ 400 thousand dollars to protect the employees and provide them with salaries for the month of September, as well as the opening the additional voluntary donations to recover the deficit until the end of December.
On the other hand, the administration of the agency was passive, it agreed on accepting the voluntary donations, but refused to talk about the possibility of the voluntary and exceptional retirement, in return for the possibility of employment and to fill of the different position in UNRWA and in the sector.
