Morocco: The Trial of the first harasser in accordance with the new law to combat violence against women

A young Moroccan in his twenties was brought before the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Court of First Instance in the city of Imintanout in Morocco on charges of sexual harassment, coinciding with the implementation of the Violence Against Women Act.

A 26-year-old boy called “Hassan” harassed a girl in the street during “Sidi Osman Fest”, an annual event held for a saint in the province of “Chichawah”, where visitors arrested the harasser and handed him over to the police.

The Public Prosecution supervised the investigation of the harasser before it was submitted to the judiciary for the implementation of the new law.

In case of his conviction, the young man will be the first Moroccan to be sentenced to six months' imprisonment, with a fine of between 2000 and 10 000 Moroccan dirhams ($ 200 to $ 1000) or one of the two penalties.
