The workers and employees of the National Railways Company launched a strike, following the General Union of Railways of the Tunisian General Labor Union’s call on Thursday, 6 September 2018.
The strike was carried out after that it was postponed on twice, in order to be able to negotiate about the 13th rail linking between the provinces of “Sfax” and “Tozeur”, which has been suspended since 2012, due to a strike launched by employees to cut this rail.
The National Railways Federation considers the cut of this railway as a suspicious operation and that there are people and parties behind it to harm the company and its services, including mainly the owners of trucks transporting phosphates.
In its statement, the federation expressed its surprise towards the state’s suspicious silence and its non-intervention to solve the problem of Line No. 13. It revealed that the number of work days lost due to the strike amounted to 6867 lost days, and that the loss of the company amounted to 341 million dinars.
The railway workers are expected to step up their protests in the coming days if the authorities’ disregard continues in dealing with this file.
