An article of the Traffic Law contravenes the Egyptian Trade Union Law and the International Labor Standards

Several trade union organizations in Egypt called on the government to stop implementing any article of the Traffic Law that compels the drivers to bring a trade union certificate, as it is in total contradiction with the provisions of the Trade Union Law.

“ Dostour” newspaper revealed quoting the Labor leader “Mohammed Ahmed Salem” that Law No. 213 of 2017 on trade union organizations and the protection of the right to organize, came to address all the effects that resulted from the implementation of Law 35 of 1976, and dealt with all the treatments that came under the new law according as article 4 of the law stipulates that" All workers without discrimination have the right to form trade union organizations, and they have the freedom to join them."

The newspaper pointed out that there is a continuous distortion that undermines the right of freedom of association on the basis of compulsory membership certificates as a condition for the renewal of the professional driving licenses, in accordance with the Traffic Law and Regulations. In fact, this article obligates the driver to bring a trade union certificate, thus, this article is violating the workers’ rights to join freely a trade union of their choice, according to Trade Union law. In addition, this compulsory membership does not comply with the international labor standards.
