On September 8, the Cairo Criminal Court sentenced the photojournalist, “Mahmoud Abu Zaid Shokan”, to five years of imprisonment in the so-called “August 2013 Rabaa massacre” case.
“Shokan”, had spent his sentence in pre-trial detention since his arrest on August 14, 2013, in the case, making his release a confirmed issue by calculating his pre-trial imprisonment as an alternative to his sentence.
In April, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded “Shokan“ its press freedom award for 2018, saying that he was doing his job, when he was arrested on the day of the end of the sit-in.
