An agreement is expected to be signed in the coming days between the government and the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) to codify the raise in the retirement age.
The government has agreed with the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) on the extension of the retirement age in the public sector by making it compulsory up to the age of 62 and optional up to the age of 65, starting from 2020, according to the director general of the Social Security at the Ministry of Social Affairs “Kamal Al-Madouri”.
According to the official Tunisian news agency, quoting from the director general of Social Security, the agreement stipulates a compulsory increase in the retirement age by two years, through different stages with three years for an optional retirement.
This increase will start from 2019 for those who will retire by one year and two for those who will reach the retirement age in 2020. This last segment, which will reach 60 years in 2020 and before reaching the age of 62, (which is compulsory) can ask for the optional retirement through writing a report to raise their retirement age by either one, two years or three years (63, 64 or 65 years).
In addition, they agreed to increase all kinds of retirement ages in the public sector by two years, i.e. if the public workers retire at the age of 40, 55 or 57 years according to the type of their work, such as the (army, security, and customs …) sectors, their retirement age will raise by 2 years, as well as, they can opt for the optional retirement, so that they can extended by three years.
