The Jordanian “Al-Ghad” website revealed that there is no intention of the government to increase the minimum wage, which is currently 220 dinars, stressing the existence of a trend in the Tripartite Commission for Labor in favor of the employers’ interests that totally refuses the increase in the minimum wage.
The website added, quoting other sources, that despite that the House of Representatives received promises, about a month ago, from the Prime Minister “Omar Al-Razzaz” to increase in the minimum wage, the Tripartite Commission, which is mandated to take this decision, has not met , to study this subject, for about two years, although its system confirms that it must meet three times a year.
“Al-Ghad” website revealed that a meeting of the tripartite committee, which was scheduled to take place two weeks ago, was postponed by one day ago.
For his part, the head of the General Federation of Jordan Trade Unions, “Mazen Maayta”, confirmed that he was not aware of "whether or not the government has retreated from raising the minimum wage, but the Ministry of Labor did not call for a meeting with the Tripartite Committee so far. As a union, we have repeatedly stressed the importance of raising the minimum wage, and we were the first to request it through a memorandum we sent immediately to “Al-Razzaz” just after he became in office"
The director of the Phenix Center for Economic and Informatics Studies, “Ahmad Awad”, said that he does not believe that there will be increases in the minimum wage. "Simply because the Ministry of Labor is in favor of the businessmen interests rather than workers. In fact, the ministry adopts the view of employers who believe that raising the minimum wage will negatively affect the business environment. "
