Iraq: Electoral Commission workers protest

On September 17, Election Commission workers held a protest rally in front of the Baghdad cabinet minister's office following an appeal by their union.

The protesters called for clarification of the Commission's contracts and whether they are concerned by the recent ministerial decree on retirement and social security.

The Electoral Commission has previously declared that its workers are not affected by the law of civil servants or by the Labor Code and that they only work during elections when they have no right to practice elsewhere during off-peak periods.

During the protest rally, they met a member of the Crisis Committee and were able to explain the legal and administrative dangers of their contracts.
