The National Health Syndicate and the Mauritanian Midwives Union issued a statement expressing their surprise at the way unions were called to meet with President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, considering their non-invitation as a "gross and systematic exclusion".
The two unions said that they were among the most active participants in the protest, in the rush in strikes and the most representative unions, considering that the solution of health problems needs to unite the efforts of all activists in the sector.
The Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is expected to meet with doctors’ representatives on Tuesday, following more than a month after their two weeks strike suspension, which coincided with the African summit, before extending the suspension period to two weeks at his request.
The doctors launched their strike at the beginning of the past five weeks, which led to the paralysis of several health institutions, the cancellation of thousands of consultations and hundreds of surgeries, while the Ministry of Health responded to the strike by announcing the cuts in the doctors' salaries and the dismissal of a number of specialists from their administrative positions in hospitals.
The doctors are asking for making urgent cases free, guaranteeing the quality of medical devices and equipment, involving the specialists in purchasing them, fighting against the counterfeit medicines and improving the human conditions through the increase of their salaries and bonuses.
