The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported that the weekly average wage for workers in the private sector, which includes more than 60% of workers in Egypt, does not exceed 670 pounds.
Private sector workers believe that the government abandoned them and is not lobbying businessmen to adopt an appropriate premium that takes into account the inflation in the country, at a time when the National Council for wages has not met since 2013.
The private sector in Egypt is suffering from several pressures due to the rising of prices, high living, and the deterioration of production, in addition to the declining factories that have failed in facing the inflation and its repercussions and those that have reduced the working hours and the dismissal of a big number of workers.
Workers in the private sector are asking for a 10 percent premium with a minimum of 250 pounds and without a ceiling to help them cope with the increase in living expenses, while there are attempts to identify the annual value of workers' wages increase, under the labor law. However, the power and influence of businessmen in the parliament prevented it, especially that the new labor law contains only four articles for the benefit of workers and the rest are in favor of the businessmen.
