The merchants of “Al-Hasahisa“ city launched a strike on August 6th and closed the shops by 90% in an unprecedented event in the history of the city, in protest against the high estimates of 2017 taxes.
The strike also included the industrial zone and the market of "Abou-Ashr" for the same reasons. Then, three hours and everything came back to the normal life, these three hours were able to deliver a message reflecting the rejection of the government's economic policies that led to the raising of prices of all goods and services and high tax estimates without any feedback from the amounts cut as services.
Pundits confirm that the "Hasahisa" merchants’ issue is inseparable from the economic crisis that is ravaging the country and that it is inevitable that the government would use taxes as the only way to cover it depenses, especially after the financial loss of huge revenues from customs after the rise of the American dollar and the reluctance of importers to import, and above all there are some known people in all the tax offices in Sudan ,who refuse to pay taxes because they enjoy high protection.
According to observers, this confirms the inequality in adhering to pay taxes that have become limited only to some people while the favored ones skip from paying taxes and no one can lawsuit them or force them to pay their share of the tax.
