Egypt: The efforts and endeavors of the government unions’ leaders to marginalize the trade union committees

The Egyptian trade unions’ followers said that the Egyptian union leaders are currently working on imposing some amendments on the Trade Unions 213 Law to return the labor situation back to Law 35.

The amendments issued by the union leaders, which control the Labor Force Committee in the House of Representatives, aim to undermine the right of trade union committees and to hinder them from expressing themselves and defending the rights of their workers.

The observers accuse the government of seeking amendments to make the union committees revert to the state of marginalization and the absence of their role, in cooperation with bodies within the state, so as not to have an active role to defend the interests of workers, thinking that the proposed amendments would abolish the growing situation of many trade unions by withdrawing from the membership of the union.

The observers consider that this kind of futility thought for some union leaders and even if it is supported by the Egyptian state, they have forgotten that this is not in the interest of the Egyptian state and does not comply with the constitution and international conventions on trade union organizations and international standards. Moreover, it will affect the country's reputation in international labor circles.
