The UNRWA workers continue to strike in their main headquarters in in Gaza for 17 consecutive days, following the call of the employees' union, protesting against the management's decision to dismiss a thousand employees, as well as, the austerity measures it takes under the pretext of the financial crisis.
Dozens of employees entered also in a hunger strike since last Saturday as a form of protest, and as a part of the escalating steps until the crisis is resolved, starting with the cancellation of the dismissal decrees.
The president of the employees’ union in Gaza, “Amir Al-Meshal” stated that a new batch of employees joined the open-ended hunger strike to meet all their fair demands, adding that the union was working with the Red Cross to provide a medical point to follow up the health of the strikers.
It is noteworthy that the strike began on Wednesday, July 25th, after that the regional office in Gaza sent letters to 120 employees on the emergency clause, ending their contracts at the end of August, and similar letters to about 800 others, ending their contracts at the end of the year. This led to the outrage of the UNRWA workers, especially that the dismissal decisions affected workers who had worked for the agency for more than 18 years, some of them in category A, i.e. they were permanent workers.
