Will the protest of retirees be looming in Tunisia?

Following the call of the General Union of Retired People of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), thousands of retirees in several Tunisian provinces held an open protest since Wednesday, 27 June at the headquarters of the regional subsidiaries of the Ministry of Social Affairs, in protest against what they considered a violation of their legitimate rights and their financial gains.

Protesters gathered in most of the provinces holding slogans and banners calling for a general increase in their pensions in the public sector, as well as, to raise the minimum guaranteed wage and the third installment of the private increase.

The retirees continue with their protests without the intervention of the concerned government departments to end their suffering, at a time when the purchasing power is witnessing an unprecedented deterioration, and the social security and retirement funds suffer from an unprecedented crisis that may threaten the halt of the pensions of hundreds of thousands of retirees in Tunisia.
