Following the assault of an Algerian girl: large internet campaigns to confront the violence imposed on women

In the recent years, Algeria has witnessed extensive internet campaigns of solidarity with abused women, following the assault of an Algerian veiled girl in physical and verbal violence while practicing jogging before maghrib prayer during the month of Ramadan.

The girl named "Rim" appeared on June 4 in a video in which she confirmed her harassment during jogging in the park of “Sablat" in the capital before Al-Iftar.

“Rim” said that she went out to practice sport for an hour before Al-Iftar as usual, until a young man passed by and start beating her badly saying "you should be in the kitchen".

Following the spread of the video, activists on social networking sites launched a campaign entitled "Let her go" in sympathy with the girl and rejecting the violence against Algerian women.

In addition, a number of Algerian girls took part in a race of ran in the park in solidarity with the girl who was attacked, following the call of Amnesty International, where they raised the " I go where I want, not in the kitchen."

The incident raised the problem of "discrimination and violence" against the Algerian women because of the "societal" backgrounds of "customs and traditions".
