The General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers calls on the International Labour Conference to compel the government to respect the trade union representation

The General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers called upon the Accreditation Committee at the International Labour Conference to take all the appropriate measures to compel the government to respect the provisions relating to the organization of relations between the ILO members, as it was excluded from the membership of the labour delegation participating in the 107th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva.

The Confederation said in a statement issued on 30 May 2018 that it reserves the right to take legal actions and to use all the means available to protect the interests of its members, condemning its exclusion by the government, especially that the representative criteria which is still in effect gives the federalism under the provisions of the law 017/2004 of the Labour Code the name “ the most representative organization” on the basis of data collected by the Ministry of Labour in 2014.

The Confederation also accused the government of encouraging the absence of representative elections among professional organizations to justify its decisions to adopt the alternation mechanism for the selection of the trade unions participating in the official delegation of Mauritania, noting that these selections have never been respected, neither in essence or in form, as some organizations still participate consistently in the delegation's formation.

The General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers stated that the 2017 representative elections was not organized, in a clear violation of the provisions of the memorandum of understanding agreed upon by the social partners in March 2017, under the auspices of the International Labour Organization.
