On Wednesday, May 30, 2018, the professional unions and several commercial sectors enter into strike, rejecting the amended income bill that is intended to be enforced by the government.
Since last week, the Council of Trade Unions has officially announced in press statements its adherence to the strike, after a meeting with the Council and the Jordanian Prime Minister, who refused to withdraw the bill.
The council has previously stated that the unions would escalate in their protest, based on the government's response to the demands of the unions and civil society.
It should be noted that last week the Council of Ministers approved an amended draft income tax law regarding those whose annual income reaches 8,000 dinars ($ 11.2 thousand) per person. On the other hand, families whose breadwinner’s annual income is less than JD16,000($ 22.5 thousand) will be exempted from paying the tax.
The previous proposal included the reduction on the income tax exemptions for individuals, whose annual income is 6,000 dinars ($ 8.4 thousand) instead of 12,000 dinars ($ 16.9 thousand) and 12,000 dinars ($ 16.9,000) for the family, instead of 24,000 Dinars (33.8 thousand dollars).
The government estimates that these amendments will amount the state treasury to about 100 million dinars ($ 141 million), especially as it will work under the amendments of the law to address the issue of tax evasion.
