The campaign of the opposition arrests is escalating in Egypt: the arrest of the activist “Hazem Abdel Adhim” and his referral to the State Security Prosecution

The Egyptian police arrested the political activist “Hazem Abdel-Adhim” on last Saturday morning and he will be referred to the Supreme State Security Prosecution for investigation amid a growing campaign against critics and opponents of the president “Abdel Fattah al-Sisi”.

Security sources revealed that Hazem was facing charges of "spreading false news and incitement against the state." This requires the issuance of an order by the prosecution to imprison him for investigation along with other political and human rights activists, who were arrested the previous weeks and accused of publishing false news, incitement against the government, joining illegal organizations.

Human rights groups accused the Sisi government of launching a broad campaign against the opposition, which they consider as the worst campaign ever in Egypt.

It is noteworthy that “Hazem Abdel-Adhim” was one of the first campaigners to elect President Abdelfattah Sisi in 2014 before becoming one of his most vocal critics. “Abdel-Adhim” was the ICT deputy minister under the former president “Hosni Mubarak”, but he took part in the January revolution, which overthrew his rule, and he also took part in the 30 June protests that overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood's rule five years ago.
