The Egyptian authorities opened, yesterday the first friendly zone for women and girls in Giza governorate, south of Cairo, by providing a safe environment free from violence and harassment in a country, which suffers from the growing sexual assaults against women.
The opening of the safe zone in “Embaba “is part of the "safe cities from violence against women and girls" program, with the participation of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, in Egypt.
The initiators of this program announced that this program aims at empowering women and girls socially to confront harassment, as well as, creating public and safe spaces for women and girls and providing the necessary measures for the social, economic and political empowerment of women and girls in public places.
It is noteworthy that more than 70% of women in Egypt are harassed and sexually assaulted in the streets, public places and in the public means of transportation, according to official statistics conducted in 2012.
