The elections of the trade union committees in Egypt: tension, clear violations and the independent trade unions are the main target

The trade union elections began on Friday after a 12-year hiatus, since the end of the 2006 elections, in a tense and chaotic atmosphere witnessed by the equestrian hall at the Cairo Stadium, forcing the Ministry of Manpower to change the director of the labour force in the capital.

Candidates have continued their submission of candidacies on Friday and Saturday to hold elections on May 31 in more than 20 sectors.

Our sources reported that many blatant abuses took place, for example more than 1,500 workers belonging to independent trade unions filed appeals and whose results were not announced and the final reports were not presented to find themselves suddenly disqualified from the candidacy process.

Moreover, many candidates whose names were included in the initial statements did not find their names in the final lists without mentioning the reasons. In addition, the procedures of the executive regulations and the law were not respected, regarding the reasons for the exclusion of the candidates.

There were trade union committees whose status have been established according to the law and have submitted their nominated papers. Their victory is supposed to be by acclamation, and no appeals have been filed against them. Strangely, their names have been presented in the initial statements, but they did not appear in the final lists, which happened, for example, in the company ENPPI Petroleum.
