Jordan: Factory workers complain over receiving less than minimum wage

Jordan – Workers at the Tafila clothing factory, owned by a foreign investor, complained that the governments decision to raise the minimum wage to 200 dinars, which is supposed to be implemented early March, is not a right for every worker.

The workers, who asked not to be named for fear of accountability, indicated that the old salary scale of 190 dinars was still in place, which was established in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor and the foreign investor, to employ about 500 “Tafili” girls.

They explained that the work, which runs from 7:30 am and ends at 4 am, is worth raising salaries and granting more bonuses. All incentives and bonuses are in the hands of the company. They consist of a non-absent allowance and a light meal allowance of about JD15 per month.

They noted that the company is threatening if it raises the minimum wage, the allowances that it considered as a gift will be deducted, while the wages should be much higher because of the great effort and hard work they make in the company.
