Morocco: Remarkable wage differentials between workers in various fields in Morocco have been replaced by demands for unification over the past five years without finding a way to implement them, but trade unions insist on putting the matter on the new government, amongst the demands for an improved minimum wage in the country.
In addition to demands for wage increases, official data reveal the vulnerability of many workers in Morocco, where the number of wage earners registered with the Social Security Fund is about 3.1 million, out of more than 10.64 million, according to the High Commissioner for Planning.
Recent data indicate that workers in industry, trade, services, construction and public works, whose wages are below the minimum, account for 45% of the total workers.
About 2.17 million people worked as unpaid trainees last year in 2016, accounting for 20.5 percent of active workers, while about 958,000 people work on a seasonal basis.
The data provided by the Kingdoms economic statistics show that 3.09 million workers do not have employment contracts with their employers, including 716,000 people working in construction and public works.
