Mauritania – Taxi owners in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott protested a new law imposing fines on some offenses committed by drivers.
Hundreds of taxi drivers gathered at the crossroads of “Madrid” and on the main street in the province of La Kasar near the military hospital.
The protesters chanted slogans against the new law, accusing the authorities of targeting citizens with taxes and fines.
The protesters blocked the taxis from working, stressing that they will paralyze the taxi traffic in the capital, especially on Gamal Abdel Nasser Street, Rousso Akgoujt, in addition to the street connecting the heart of the capital and the provinces of the north (to Luxor and Tartar).
The authorities have announced a new law that includes fines for some offenses ranging from 6 thousand to 20 thousand and began a month ago the mobilization of the new law that will enter into force with the beginning of May.
