Algeria: Health sector goes on strike

Algeria – The doctors, pharmacists and dental surgeons entered a two-day national strike to protest against the  Minister Boudiaf, who insists on closing the dialogue and refusing to resume stalled negotiations within the joint committee, according to the union. Participants in the strike criticized the abuses and harassment the doctors suffered by the administration, in order to break the protest. Participants held the Ministry responsible for such practices, especially since labour low protects the right to strike as it includes articles protecting the right to trade union activity and strike. This explains why  the unions of the independent bloc fear the current draft of the new labour law as it ensures a significant decline in these gains not only in the public service, but even in the private sector. With regard to the response rate for the strike on its first day, the spokesman said nationally it was estimated at 70 percent, while it rose to about 72 percent in the state of Algeria, compared to 60 percent in Bejaia and 90 percent in Tizi Ouzou. The percentage in Medea was 58 percent, compared with 73 percent in Constantine. The participants expected to register a stronger response today, which will coincide with the vigil planned in front of the Ministry of Health to demand the opening of dialogue and negotiations.
