Algeria: Djanet Municipal workers strike to demand their rights

Algeria – Djanet municipal workers entered an open-ended strike to demand the settlement of their professional demands made by trade union representation under the General Union of Algerian Workers. The strike halted most of the municipalitys services, such as lighting and other services across the city. The letter submitted by the union to the mayor of Djanet revealed a number of previous demands that the mayor promised to meet,  but according to the letter the demands have not been met yet and that workers were disappointed. Workers denied any connection between the open strike and the election date to be held on Thursday, the demands include payment of salaries of contracted workers for three months, payments of allowances, In addition to specifying a specific date for the payment of monthly salaries, distribution of positions to contractual workers, senior integration workers in the municipality and the social network, provide housing for employees, engineers and municipal workers, while municipal housing is occupied by persons from outside the municipality, absence of security at a time when female workers constitute the majority of staff.
