Mauritania: Security forces violently suppressed a peaceful protest

Mauritania – Security forces violently suppressed a peaceful protest organized by the Secondary Education Teacher Union on Wednesday in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott. This act by police sparked criticism among activists. The union condemned the polices use of brutal and cowardly violence against the protesting professors in front of the buildings of the Ministry of National Education. In a statement, the union declared its full solidarity with the professors who were suppressed, and adopted their demands, and held the ministry full responsibility for not building a relationship with the teacher. The union called all teachers to mobilize in defense of their rights, warning the Ministry of National Education of such to meet the teachers demands and stop ignoring and suppressing. The statement called for the release of all late allowances and salaries retained by force, calling on all parties in the education sector to contribute to the enforcement of the educational system. The National Union of Teachers of Secondary Education has called for a general cessation of teaching for two hours across the nation, to demand the Mauritanian authorities to pay some of the bonuses demanded by professors
