Mauritania – The Mauritanian anti-slavery movement (IRA) condemned yesterday an agreement recently signed by the Mauritanian Ministry of Labour and the Saudi Ministry of Labour to bring domestic workers from Mauritania. The agreement aims to create a regulated slavery market for the Mauritania sons and daughters, especially the Harateen group, which has been and continues to provide Saudi homes with servants and slaves, who are exposed to torture, rape and inhuman practices, the movement said. This is a very dangerous step and is another expression of the adherence of the racist regime in Nouakchott to the slavery that Mauritanian people especially the haratins (former slaves), have been suffering from, the government is seeking to benefit from this move as an economic resource, just like Iron, copper and others industries, according to the movement. All the international human rights and the civil organizations and trade unions working in Mauritania stand firm in the face of all forms of contemporary intercontinental slavery and in the face of trafficking, the IRA movement said in its statement. The movement stressed that Mauritania people should not have their dignity or freedom compromised because of their poverty and their need for jobs the movement added.
