Egypt: More than one million seasonal workers work without insurance

About 1.2 million seasonal workers suffer from the harsh working conditions and the lack of insurance, making their lives and the lives of their families at risk all the time. Their sufferings increasein case of death or accident.

It is known that the Egyptian president called for a life insurance system for seasonal workers working in state projects, so as to develop a certificate called Aman as a kind of insurance for these workers.

According to the data of the Annual Bulletin of Labour Force Statistics of 2016 issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, seasonal workers represent 1.2 million i.e.seasonal workers are about 5% of the estimated number of labour force in Egypt which is about 25.3 million people.

The seasonal workers community hopes to obtain their full rights and to be integrated in general into the labour community with a lawthat guaranteestheir rights, especially since the idea of enacting their own legislation was absent from the government.

It is expected that the insurance system will include a financial compensation in case of disability or death, or the payment of a pension, as the case may be, so that the pension will be paid to those who are required to participate after reaching the age of 60 years, or the payment of compensation due when a worker is partially incapacitated or has a total disability.
