The education sector in Algeria is witnessing a severe crisis between the unions and the government, especially with the teachers strike, organized by the Independent National Council, for weeks, in addition to today’s strike and the strike scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday February 21st.
The National Independent Council of 14 unions operating in the sectors of health, education, training, universities and public employment in Algeria has decided to notify the government of a comprehensive strike on April 4th and implement a series of protests, in case the authorities do not meet their demands of the bloc concerning the amendment of the Labour Code and the definition of hard work which requires the possibility of pre-retirement.
The Minister of Education had threatened to dismiss the striking professors in accordance with the decision of the Administrative Court, which ruled that the strike is illegal. The Algerian prime minister also threatened to enforce the rule of law and stop chaos. However, human rights organizations warned against the governments decisions which may worsen the situation.
The professors are demanding that to settle their suspended file in two states, improve labour services, revive the work area grant in the southern and desert regions, and find formulas for resolving housing and promotions.
