Jordan: ATUC participates in a regional workshop to combat child labour

Jordan – Arab Trade Unions Confederation participated in a workshop on the role of trade unions in combating child labour, held in the Jordanian capital by the International Labor Organization in cooperation with the General Union of Trade Unions in Jordan. The ATUC executive secretary, Mustafa Tlili represented Arab Trade Union Confederation in the workshop, which discussed ways to activate the role of trade unions in tackling this phenomenon. The ILO Bureau for Workers ‘Activities (ACTRAV) organised a two day regional workshop on child labour for trade unions in the Arab States from 13 to 14 July 2017 in Amman (Jordan).Jordanian Minister of Labour Ali al-Ghazzawi said that the number of child labourers in Jordan for 2016 reached to 76 thousand for the age groups between (5_17) and by 8% of the total population. Al-Ghazzawi pointed out that child labor was distributed among the capital by 33% compared to 67% for the rest of the governorates in 2016. Most of them were males 89% compared to 11% for females. He pointed out that vehicles repair sector took the largest portion of child labour at 36%, followed by agriculture (27%), manufacturing (16%), construction (8%) and (12%) for the rest of sectors. In her opening remarks at the workshop, the director of ACTRAV, Maria Helena André, stressed the key role played by trade unions in eradicating child labour in the region. Ms André encouraged participants to intensify their efforts to eliminate child labour by 2025 in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). With the support of ACTRAV, unions will prepare strategies and coordinate their policies to combat child labour in the Arab States.The regional workshop was organised in the framework of preparations for the upcoming IV Global Conference on the Sustained Eradication of Child Labour which will be held in Buenos Aires from 14 to 16 November 2017.
