Yemen: Arab Trade Union Confederation denounces Yemeni unionist prosecution

Yemen – Arab Trade Union Confederation ATUC, the Arab branch of the International Confederation, condemns the prosecution of trade unionist Saleh Jeleidan, who holds trade union responsibilities in the institution he works for, the French company for oil exploration (Total). Jeleidan is facing judicial proceedings and to be tried on criminal charges. ATUC said in a statement that what Jeleidan had done was within the framework of peaceful trade union work, which is keen to respect the basic rights of its colleagues and citizens. The ATUC was surprised by these measures, especially as the International of Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) was the main organization currently concerned at the international level in ILO and the United Nations to mobilize the international community and international public opinion for Yemen and stand with them in these difficult circumstances to restore peace and reconstruction and help Yemen build a better future. What is happening with Saleh Jeleidan cannot but give a negative impression among trade union organizations around the world about how Yemen is dealing with trade union conditions, the statement said. ATUC appealed to the Yemeni authorities to take the appropriate decisions to preserve Jeleidan rights especially that the international agreements signed between Yemen and the International Labor Organization provide that the right of trade unionists in carrying out their duties should be respected.
