Egypt: “regina” workers escalate protests to demand allowances

Egypt – Workers at Regina Company in the industrial zone of Sadat City organized a labour strike to demand payment of allowances for those who are not subjected to the Civil Service Law issued by President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, published in the Official Gazette on 13 September 2015. Saad Shaaban, president of Egypts Democratic Workers Union, said the companys management files a lawsuit against 18 workers accusing them of causing the company to lose 800,000 pounds a day due to the strike. Shabaan said that workers organized the strike after the management refused to distribute the allowances claiming that they are not making profits.  Magdy Abdul Ghani, head of unions workers committee, said the administration not only refused to pay the workers allowance but also controlled the fund, which was established to help them financially. He pointed out that the committee filed a complaint to the Labour Office to prove the state of the peaceful strike and the absence of any losses caused by the workers to the company. The General Union of Egyptian Workers had another opinion, as Khalid Aish, president of the General Union of Food Industries, confirmed that the workers had nothing to do with the union.
