Mauritania: Road maintenance workers protest over delayed wages

Mauritania – – Road maintenance workers between the two areas of Al-Zubail and Daghni Sabah have stopped working in protest against what the employer who has been delaying the payment of salaries in flagrant violation of the labuor laws. The construction of the 85 km long road funded by the Saudi Fund for Development has been halted at all sites of the Arab Contractors Company. The workers complained to the regional labour inspector of the local administrative authorities of these violations but the authorities did not move and the regional inspector did not take measures to compel the company to respect the law. All project workers belong to the National Union of Infrastructure Workers, affiliated to the General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers, which has undertaken missions to support workers representatives in their negotiations with the company. However, the latter has shown no desire to enter into negotiations with the workers or to improve the living conditions of workers.
