Egypt: Workers in the public and private sectors demand their allowances

Egypt – Workers in the public and private sectors threatened to protest against the delay in the payment of periodic allowances, workers pressured the government to implement presidential directives to approve allowances for private sector workers, however, the Council of Ministers said that the directives are non-binding to employers. In the public sector, workers have demanded a 10% cost of living allowance, threatening to protests if the government refuses to pay workers. The delay in the payment of the allowance to the workers of the public business sector, scheduled to be disbursed on the first of July of this year, pushed workers of the spinning company in Gharbia to refrain from paying their monthly salaries, in protest against the delay in the payment of allowances, on Thursday (June 29th), the cabinet approved a new increase in fuel prices. The Minister of Manpower Mohamed Saafanpublished a leaflet to the manpower directorates on paying allowances to the workers in the private sectors on Thursday, July 20. Prime Minister Sherif Ismail and the Minister of Manpower witnessed on Tuesday, July 18, the signature of Collective Labor agreement with representatives of workers and businessmen institutions to pay social allowances to 18 million workers in private sectors starting from July. “The 10 percent allowance will be a minimum ofLE 165 and maximum of LE 330,” said Saafanadding that a press conference should be held after signing the agreement to declare the rules of social allowances.
