Jordan – The General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU) appreciated the House of Representatives support of trade unions and labour rights and the right to strike, which was granted by international conventions signed by Jordan. The Federation expressed its appreciation in a press statement issued Monday following the approval of the House of Representatives to abolish the amended text Article 183 repeated contained in the amending draft law of the Penal Code, which criminalizes workers strike to claim their rights and protect their gains. The statement said that the Federation is thankful for the position of the House of Representatives, and the Legal Committee and the Labour Committee, as they stood with the labour forces and revealed the refusal to violate one of the basic rights of workers. The Legal Committee in the House of Representatives rejected the proposal submitted by the government on the imposition of a three-year sentence on workers who strike, the Council recommended the cancellation of this text, which was ratified by the House of Representatives.
