Bahrain: Union Federation demand labour rights for female cleaners

Bahrain –  The Womens Network stressed in a meeting held at the headquarters of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions the importance of providing decent working conditions for female workers in the cleaning sector and not delaying the wages of female workers. The participants discussed the situation of women workers in the cleaning sector, which is a rapidly developing sector in Bahrain. Statistics of Trade and Tourism Ministry indicate that 6 permits were issued to cleaning offices during 10 days of August. The network coordinator, Suad Mubarak, said during the meeting that the number of workers in the sector according to the statistics of the General Organization for Social Insurance reached 2563 and the total number of foreign workers reached 36012 at 7.1%, noting that the number of Bahraini workers in this sector reached 449 workers, and the total number of workers reached 30206 at 1.5 %. She said the wages of cleaning workers ranged from 120-150 dinars, along with accommodation and transportation, and sometimes food is provided by employers, and some employers send their wages straight to their country and they depend on what the company provides them or what the employers give them as extra money.  While some do not get a week day off, and the working hours of these workers range from 11-12 hours a day.
