Mauritania: ATUC denounces the arrest of the Secretary of The Free Confederation of Mauritanian Workers

Mauritania – Arab Trade Unions Confederation (ATUC) denounced the arrest  of the Secretary-General of the Free Confederation of Mauritanian Workers Samory Ould beye beye by Mauritanian police forces for several hours on charges  of receiving foreign funding, but the Union recognizes that the harassment of Ould Beye is due to his rejection of slavery practices in Mauritania.ATUC also denounced the continued harassment of Mauritanian trade unionists, calling for an end to these practices, and declaring its support for the unionists demands for the empowerment of workers in Mauritania. The Union also calls on the Mauritanian government to take serious steps to end the practices that fall within the framework of slavery in Mauritania. Ould Beye previously expressed his rejection of any slavery practices in Mauritania, stressing that the measures taken by the Mauritanian government are not serious, and called on international organizations, including the International Trade Unions Confederation, to pressure the Mauritanian government in this regard.
