Egypt- The union leaders condemned sending four employees of the Public Transport Authority to trial for engaging in political activity, violating the law as public servants, and acting in ways that disturb public security and affect social peace according to the list of charges against them. Chairman of the Economic and Social Rights Committee at the National Council for Human Rights, Kamal Abbas, pointed out that the labour movement currently does not have the freedom to raise its demands. . Abbas said that there have been violent confrontations to any protest movement for workers in recent years, such as the arrest of 15 workers from the Telecom Egypt, because of their gathering in front of Ramses Central, to demand allowance. He added that last year 26 workers from the military arsenal company were arrested and sent to military trial, 13 workers of them spent four months in prison, and were released only after being forced to resign from work. He pointed out that 6 workers from the public transport authority were arrested, and some labour leaders were dismissed from companies such as Esco and the Suez fertilizers, pointing out that despite the pressure on workers, they did not stop their protests because they are legitimate demands and came due to the high cost of living.
