Iran suppresses Kurdish demonstrations in protest against killing of workers

Iran – Dozens of protesters flocked to streets after the killing of two workers by the Iranian security forces. Clashes have broken out between the protesters and Iranian security personnel during the attempt to disperse the demonstrators in the Kurdish city of Baneh. Kurdish activists posted pictures and clips through social networking sites, showing thousands of citizens gathered in front of the headquarters of the town of Baneh. Several protesters were wounded by the security forces that arrested a number of young people. Security forces used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators who stormed the building of the city’s municipality.  In wake of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards killing two Kurdish porters for carrying goods across the Iran-Kurdistan Region border, a large number of people in the Kurdish city of Baneh have closed down their shops in protest and have taken to the streets confronting Iranian authorities. According to the human rights agency Harana the protesters demanded the authorities to stop the indiscriminate firing on workers as well as the removal of the mayor of Baneh city, who did nothing to prevent the targeting of innocent people. Dozens of Kurdish citizens work as illegal goods carriers due to poverty across the rugged mountains on the Iran-Iraq border, these workers are killed by police, border guards or the Revolutionary Guard each year.
