Mauritania – The General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation Sharan Burrow sent a message to Mauritanian President General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz condemning the recent intimidation of the General Secretaries of the General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CGTM) and The Free Confederation of Mauritanian Workers (CLTM).
The General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) expressed her deep regret over the threat of the union leaders, reminding the President of the Republic that restricting the freedom of movement of trade unionists is a flagrant violation of the right to organize enshrined in International Convention No. 87 of the International Labour Organization ratified by the Mauritanian State, (ITCU) said systematic and arbitrary investigations against trade union officials are a clear threat to trade union freedoms.
On August 25, the anti-economic and financial crimes police summoned Mr. Abdullah Ould Mohamed, the secretary-general of the the General Confederation of Mauritanian Workers and Mr. Samurie Ould Elbe, secretary-general of The Free Confederation of Mauritanian Workers, without giving any legal reason. Both leaders were subjected to Questioning and interrogating for more than an hour on sources of funding, financial budgets and budget management of the two trade unions without allowing them to bring their lawyers.
Following the questioning, the public prosecutor asked the investigating judge to open an investigation against Mr. Abdullah, and charge him of corruption, while being subjected to judicial monitoring and preventing him from traveling outside the capital, Nouakchott.
The ITUC called on the Mauritanian government in its letter to immediately cease irresponsible behavior and abuses against the Mauritanian trade union officials and to stop all judicial proceedings related to them.
