Bahrain – The Secretary General of the General Federation of Bahraini Trade Unions Hassan Al-Halwaji said that the Federation represents the most Arab labour unions in terms of representation of women in its General Secretariat, as they represent 26%. He pointed out that women have 4 out of 15 seats in the General Secretariat of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions, and they lead many committees like “Women, Children, Finance and Administration, Training and Education, as well as the Youth Secretariat Committee.” Women in the General Federation have proven their existence and there had been no quota system as they won the seats through free elections, and in an atmosphere of encouragement for their participation. He pointed out that the percentage of women in the membership of the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions is 15%. Our ambition is to raise this figure to 25% by the end of the current cycle. We have developed strategic plans to empower and train women in unions affiliated to the General Federation of Bahraini Trade Unions. He stressed that the Federation have developed a strategy for the next four years in order to raise the representation of women in trade union work and to benefit from womens potential in the future, stressing that they have a strong belief in the potential of women and their ability to prove their existence in this field.
