EGYPT: Quarry workers object to the decision to amend their contracts

Egypt- _More than 800 workers in the quarry project in Sharkia province called on the Governor of Sharkia to cancel his decision to reduce the wages of workers, because it will negatively affect their social life. The workers expressed their dissatisfaction with the decisions that would lead to a reduction of their salaries to 900 pounds, saying that the decision would lead to social disasters especially that most workers took loans and would face prison if they fail to pay the depts. Naim Gawish, head of the former Sharkia Workers Union and director of workers affairs in the quarries project, said that the workers in the project are permanent workers in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 12 of 2003, which regulate labour relations, and is governed by Law No. 27 of 1981 on mines and quarries, which means they cannot be treated as seasonal workers. The former director of quarries workers said what about previous employment service when applying the governors decision to reduce the salaries of workers, What about the total salaries of the employees and what is their insurance position, especially that they are insured by the National Authority in the Employees Fund of the government and that the Fatwa Committee of the State Council has not stopped transferring them after stabilizing their situation, especially since there are workers who have been working for more than 30 years and have been given bonuses and incentives according to Laws.
