Algeria: foreign companies take over the efforts of Algerian workers

Algeria – The Ministry of Labour has recently recruited the directorates of the labour inspectorates, in order to intensify the field inspection campaigns on foreign companies active in Algeria, to ensure that they apply the public transactions law, including the application for the employment rate of Algerians, which must be not less than 30 percent, in addition to equal wages between foreign workers and their Algerian counterparts. The Ministry of Labour resorted to this deterrent measure after noting abuses and breaches by some companies. The competent departments of the Ministry have introduced procedures based mainly on work permits for foreign workers to control and regulate the labour market, such as The qualifications and expertise of the foreign worker shall be commensurate with the professions required in the Algerian market and the foreign worker shall obtain a work permit in accordance with the applicable laws and regulations. The ministry stipulated that licenses should be granted to some companies after ensuring that there is no qualified local labour for such jobs in the employment offices, because foreign companies are obliged to provide job opportunities for the national labour force. The strict control measures on these companies came to absorb the anger of the unemployed, as many States have seen series of protests because some foreign oil companies did not apply the rate of employment of Algerians in the crew of workers.
