Tunisia – An agreement was signed to increase the wages of workers of the press and digital media sector between the Tunisian General Labour Union and the Union of Newspaper Directors at the Ministry of Social Affairs. After two years of waiting and difficult negotiations between the trade union parties and representatives of employers and the government party, they agreed to 6 percent increase for the years 2016 and 2017 as well as the increase in the number of grants. The parties also agreed to impose procedures to rescue and improve paper-based newspapers, the state will guarantee social security, organize public advertising, subscriptions and providing the support fund. These measures were taken by the government after a decisive intervention by the trade union center of the Tunisian General Labour Union. The implementation of the joint agreement is a historic achievement as it is a precedent in the history of the sector. In Tunisia, the number of newspapers and news websites grew significantly after the revolution after it suffered a closure in the age of tyranny and it created hundreds of jobs for workers, however the questions remained about the respect for the labour law in terms of wages, decent work and occupational health and safety.
