Morocco: workers threaten to strike to demand the reopen of Mohammadia refinery

Morocco –  The workers of “Mohammadia refinery”  the only refinery in Morocco will organize two marches between the cities of Mohammadia and Casablanca to protest the suspension of refining for more than two years. The first march is scheduled to take place on Saturday between the two cities, while the second is expected to be organized on October 14. . The move comes amidst the failure to sell the company under judicial liquidation, the refinery Trade Union, raise the slogan at a press conference on Thursday to Release Mohammadia refinery. Last year Casablanca commercial court decided to liquidate the refinery and authorize the continuation of the operation, so that Morocco would not lose the refinery that was established in the 1960s. This came after the accumulation debts exceeding four billion dollars under Samir group’s which had been privatized in the nineties of the last century. . The workers, who organized a press conference today in Casablanca, sounded the alarm about the future of the refinery, which provides hundreds of jobs, not to mention Moroccos fuel needs. They pointed out that the suspension of the refinery led to the monopoly of distribution companies to the market and prices, in addition to the serious threat to the national security stockpile of petroleum fuels. workers were surprised that the Prime Minister, the Minister of Economy and Finance and the Minister of Energy and Minerals had not responded to their calls for a meeting on the refinery crisis. They called for the help the refinery to recover from its collapse and resume its industrial activity soon and before it is too late, while maintaining the historical symbolism and the companys technical and human capital.
