Jordan – The 2017 Global Gender Gap Report, issued by the World Economic Forum, showed that Jordan ranked 9th out of 14 Arab countries at bridging the gender gap for 2017. the ranking showed a halt in the slow progress of attempts to narrow the global gender gap for the first time since 2006, the Sisterhood Is Global Institute (SIGI) said . Jordan’s rank in 2017 fell one spot, standing at 135th out of 144 countries listed in the report, compared to last year, while in 2015 it ranked 140th among 145 countries, SIGI said in a statement. The Kingdom’s ranking was based on four classifications: economic participation (138), education (51), health (113) and political participation (126), SIGI added. The institute said that the impact of efforts aimed at narrowing the gender gap will remain weak as long as there are high unemployment rates among women, which currently stands at 33.9 per cent.
