Egypt: Union of Petroleum Workers Refuses to refer Strike and Demonstration cases to State Security Courts

Egypt – The General Trade Union of Petroleum Workers strongly rejected the Prime Ministers decisions to refer cases of protest, strike and sit-in to state security courts after they had been tried before the general courts. The Union said in a statement on Tuesday that these decisions came few hours before declaring the end of the state of emergency, which is a clear violation of all the laws and international conventions signed by Egypt in the past years, which consider the strike a legitimate labour right. We are supposed to pass a law that would regulate trade union freedoms, so the Egyptian General Trade Union of Petroleum Workers considers these decisions clear violation against the rights of workers and trade unionists.
