Egypt – The formation of a Supreme council of independent trade unions in Egypt, led by the Egyptian Democratic Labour, was announced yesterday, with the membership of sixteen public associations, regional federations, and the most important and prominent independent trade unions, Where they represent more than two million workers at the level of the Republic. The founding statement said that the formation of the Supreme Council of Independent Trade Unions has become an urgent necessity to unify the movement in a way that enables it to defend the freedom of association, especially after the announcement of secret meetings between those who claim to be representatives of independent trade unions and officials of the administrative committee of the Governmental Union, to pass the draft law on trade union organizations, which is submitted to the Labour Committee of the Egyptian parliament, in complete disregard for social dialogue. The statement added “only the worker can determine his or her decision to join or not to join trade union organization, it should not be compulsory membership, also the General Assemblies of the unions can decided whether or not to join a general union or regional union or a qualitative union or a national union.”
