Iraq: federation of Trade Union criticizes amendments of the Personal Status Law

Iraq – The Secretariat of Women Affairs working in The Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions  said that the process of passing the draft amendment of the Personal Status Law No. 88 of 1959, is illegal, and was done despite the objections of parliamentary blocs and the Iraqi street and civil society organizations. The amendment constitutes a societal setback, and a form of violence against women and a flagrant violation of human rights. The general secretariat  said that leaving the amendment of the personal status law at the hands of different sects and religions representatives enshrines the division that forces in the authorities have always sought to make it a permanent reality. The amendment clearly encourages the marriage of minors, even those who are only nine years old. The amendment, approved by the House of Representatives, comes at a time when the country is facing human rights abuses in particular the rights of women, especially after ISIS attack, which humiliated Iraqi women to the point of selling them in prostitution markets. Instead of addressing this serious deterioration in the human rights record and work to put an end to it, we find that the parliament ignored this”
