Jordan: Anti-Human Trafficking Unit investigates (193) cases

Jordan – During this year, the Human Trafficking Unit affiliated to the Directorate of Public Security investigated 193 cases that it considered human trafficking. When transferred to the courts, only 15 were classified as trafficking, while the remaining cases were classified as labour disputes according to Capt. Mohammed Al Azzam  from Studies Department in the Unit. This came during a workshop held yesterday by the Arab Organization for Democracy and Development, the Land of Legal Aid, and Tamkeen Center for Support, to launch Empowering Syrian Refugees program aimed at training refugees and residents of host communities in Amman and Zarqa. . Azzam pointed out that 147 human trafficking victims were provided with shelter in Dar Al Karama, a government shelter for victims of human trafficking, in addition to another house run by the Jordanian Womens federation. In order to better implement the Law on the Prevention of Human Trafficking, the participants concluded that the crime of trafficking in human beings should be redefined in a more precise and clear manner, that takes into account the Jordanian legislative environment which is not commensurate with the definition of the Protocol. They stressed the need to provide definitions of words that the Jordanian legislator had neglected, such as slavery-like practices, which are defined in the Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery of 1956, and not to limit exploitation in certain forms. They pointed to the importance of legislative coordination between the law on the prevention of human trafficking and the Penal Code, Some of the acts in the definition of the Prevention of Trafficking in Persons Act constitute separate crimes under the Penal Code such as kidnapping, fraud and forced prostitution.
